Grade A Stupid//Book Review

Grade A Stupid
by: A.J. Lape
3.5/5 stars

I was very close to giving this book a full 4 stars, but I just couldn't. It was great, don't get me wrong. But it was not at all what I was expecting (and not necessarily in the fun, plot twist, way).
Also, there's the fact that some parts were not believable at all. We'll get to those later.

This book is about a girl named Darcy. She's 15 years old and in high school. She has a smokin' hot guy for a best friend, but she only sees him as that, a best friend.
He's super protective of her in what's actually kind of a controlling way. Who are you talking to? Why are you getting a ride home from him? That kind of thing. But yet the two claim they're just friends. Allllllrighty then.

Anyway, one day Darcy was bored in class and sees someone else looking suspicious so what does she do? Ditches the rest of class and follows this kid outside.
She sees him by the dumpsters across the street and once he leaves, she goes to investigate what was so darn interesting over there.
What was it?
Oh, you know, just A DEAD BODY!

Yeah, so that's where things got interesting, but were different than I would have thought.

So Darcy is freaking out and wants to know what exactly happened to this guy.
Was it one of the gangs in town?
Did the kid who skipped class have something to do with this?

Okay, so far, believable. A little far-fetched, but sure, it could happen.
Here's the thing --

After one of Darcy's friends is arrested for murdering this guy, Darcy decides she herself is going to prove his innocence.
At FIFTEEN years old.
She becomes friendly with a couple guys who will drive her around where she needs to go - the police station, etc.

She literally pretends to be a lawyer at one point to get information.
That's where it lost half a star people.
What FIFTEEN year old could even pretend to get away with something like that?
I don't know. But it works in Darcy's world.

So it lost half a star there, but the rest of the story was actually really good.
It was interesting because I definitely was under the impression that the story was mostly going to be about her trying to find a boyfriend (that's in there though) and I spent the entire story thinking "Oh, pick him!" "No wait, he's better for you!"

Wasn't expecting crime.

Overall though, a very good read.
Easy too.
I will probably check out the second book eventually.....
